ENJOINING ORDER AGAINST UNP WC EXTENDED AGAIN

The Mount Lavinia District Court yesterday (5) extended till September 19 the Enjoining Order restrainin­g the Working Committee of the main opposition UNP from giving effect to amendments passed at the Committee meeting held on July 19.

District Court Judge K. Priyantha Fernando initially issued the Enjoining Order operative till August 22 against the amendments to the Party Constituti­on thereby extending UNP leader’s term for 6 years by party’s Working Committee.

The Plaintiff cited UNP leader Ranil Wickremesi­nghe, its Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa, its Chairman Gamini Jayawickre­ma Perera, its General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and the Working Committee members (altogether 85) as Defendants.

Satendra Maithri Gunaratne who was a Southern Provincial Council Member of the UNP representi­ng the Galle District. K. Lankathill­ake instructed by Mallawarac­hchi Associates, appeared for the 1st Defendant Ranil Wickremesi­nghe and 31 other Defendants and moved for time to file answers and objections. Thisath Wijeguna- wardena instructed by Vishva Gunaratne appeared for the 2nd Defendant Sajith Premadasa and moved for time to consider filing objections if any. Asela Rekawa instructed by Subashini De Costa appeared for the 41st Defendant Ranjith Madduma Bandara and moved for time to consider filing objections if any.

He contends that in any event, the Party Working Committee is under obligation under and in terms of the Constituti­on to convene the Annual Convention in the month of December each year which the 1st to 85th Defendants who are members of the Working Committee have failed and neglected to do so in the year 2011.
