Uni’s open says Govt., FUTA says will fight on

Universities in the country, which had been closed for more than two weeks, would re-open today, the Ministry of Higher Education said yesterday.
Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne, said that all universities and other higher education institutions would also come back to normal today. Thirteen universities and eight institutions were indefinitely closed from August 21 because of the strike staged by university lecturers.
However, Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) President Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri said that they would be continuing with their strike action despite the decision of the ministry re-open the universities.
He said the union action would continue till they succeed in winning their demands. FUTA was currently engaged in talks with higher education authorities in order to obtain their demands
