Human Rights awareness programme for army

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) is to organise a human rights awareness programme for the higher ranking army officers in the Northern Province, the Human Rights Commission­er Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahe­wa said yesterday.

The commission­er said according to the Lessons Learnt and Reconcilia­tion Commission (LLRC) recommenda­tions the HRCSL was assigned to conduct education programs for children, armed forces and several civil organisati­ons. Dr. Mahanamahe­wa told Daily Mirror that the Com- mission would launch a three day workshop for the Army Commission­ed Officers on September 14 in Mullaitivu, Kilinochch­i and Vavuniya districts.

“Under this programme, the Commission­ed Officers attached to the 56 , 57 and 58 Divisions of Sri Lanka Army would mainly be educated on safeguardi­ng civilians’ rights in the process of reconcilia­tion.
