Jaffna Hindu College and Ananda College collaborate to build bridges
Over the last few months Jaffna Hindu College and Ananda College, Colombo, icons of the Hindu and Buddhist communities in Sri Lanka, have been collaborating to build bridges, bridges erected on old foundations to provide opportunities for their students, staff and parents to cross over the invisible barriers that have built up over the last few decades.
As a first step the Colleges will be playing a cricket match on September 7th and 8th to start a partnership that will spread across many activities with the passage of time. The venue will be the Ananda College grounds this year, shifting over to Jaffna in 2013. A celebratory dinner will also be held on September 7th at the Taj Samudra Hotel.
The Cricket match will be for the Sivagurunathan Trophy, in respectful memory of Mr. V.T.S. Sivagurunathan, a JHC alumnus who was a stalwart during Ananda’s formative years. He served at Ananda from 1916 to 1942 as Headmaster and much more during the period of Principal P. de S. Kularatne.
This ground-breaking cricket encounter is patently not just about the two schools and will, the organisers hope, encourage others to start similar events to expand the network of goodwill and cooperation.
All are welcome and earnestly invited to turn up at the match and participate, even for a short period, to give encouragement and add momentum to this timely initiative.
