COUNTER - STRIKE : GLOBAL OFFENSIVE

-

Fans of counter strike should be quite happy with the latest installment of the series. Importantly, the game manages to retain all the characteristics that made it so popular with gamers in the first place, which in itself is quite impressive given the fact that the game has been around for a decade or so. the new installment includes a couple of new game modes that sound like a lot of fun.

I’m quite certain that many of you are already aware of Counter Strike (CS) and if you are not, then all you have to do is visit one of the many gaming cafes just after school. Of course, the game is not limited to kids or game cafes, but is generally dominated by younger players. Unlike many other popular first person shooters, CS is exclusively a multiplayer affair. Users can opt to play alone on maps and can do so by playing against bots but even that is supposed to simulate a multiplayer game. Players can opt between two different levels of the game: Casual Level, which ignores things like friendly fire and auxiliary purchases; and Ranked Level, which seeks to provide more realistic gameplay with features like friendly fire.

Regardless at which level you plan on using to play the game, there are several maps involved that force teams to adopt different strategies. Counter Strike Global Offensive recreates many of the original maps that players have come to enjoy over the years. One notable example is de_ dust, where one team (Terrorists) is tasked with planting a bomb at a critical location and defend it until it explodes. Meanwhile, the other team (Counter-Terrorists) is tasked with either stopping them before they plant the bomb or defusing it before it goes off. Other game types like hostage rescue are also available in the new game. However, in my experience, players, especially in Sri Lanka, are not too interested in saving the hostages. Instead, the thrill is finding and killing all enemy players. We only resorted to saving hostages when someone from the other side went AFK (Away From Keyboard) or when we got bored.

Global Offensive also features improvements to the graphics and sound engine but fear not, sound profiles for the weapons are retained from the original game. Needless to say, most of the improvements to the interface are not stunning but they are exactly what fans would expect. The original CS game series was popular because it was a simple, fun game that didn’t need expensive specs to run. Thankfully, in this regard, the sequel is much like the original.

Thus, it is clear that Global Offensive is keeping much of the original game but it is the new features that may prove to be the most fun yet.Two different game modes are introduced: Arms Race and Demolition. Both game modes provide a radical alternative to the usual weapons purchasing system. Arms Race is a death matchbased mode where each player earns a new weapon with each kill. So the first player to register a kill with every weapon is the winner. Demolition mode is a round-based mode, which does not features weapon and equipment purchasing, but instead players earn progressively weaker weapons for each kill. Both modes are also interesting in terms of teamwork. Arms Race, for instance, does not involve much teamwork since everyone out there will try to be first to register kills with all the weapons. Demolition, however, allows players to strategize amongst themselves to keep the firepower advantage on their side.
