Samuel Rodrigo

The 11th death anniversar­y of well-known comedian Samuel Rodrigo – better known as Amaris Ayya in Vinoda Samaya – falls on September 15.

Born on September 22 in 1921 in Moratuwa, Samuel Rodrigo grew up in Kelaniya. He made his acting debut in W. B. Makuloluwa’s ‘Ohoma Hindada’

in 1946 and a few years later joined the ‘Wihilu

playing Thahalu’ group at the Radio Ceylon Amaris Ayya together with

colleagues Berty Gunathilak­a and Annesley Dias.

Since then he was popular as Amaris Ayya. He

also acted in several films and stage

plays. He died on September 15, 2001

at the age of 80.

Sagarika Gomez

The 23rd death anniversar­y of well-known radio artiste, singer and television presenter Sagarika Gomez falls on September 13. The girl with loads of promise died

under tragic circumstan­ces and her body

was recovered from the Dehiwela beach

after she was abducted the previous night.

Sagarika took part in several arts and cul-tur al events from her childhood. She sang and acted in stage plays

like Maname, Sinhabahu, Pematho Jayathi

Soko, Wessanthar­a and also took part as

a Radio Ceylon dubbing artiste. She was also co-producer the

of the ‘popular ‘Kala Rasanga’ segment on ITN.
