NAVY WINS ENGINEERIN­G EXCELLENCE AWARD – 2012

Introduces new drug infusion system for Thalassaem­ia patients

The Navy has introduced a new drug infusion system which is highly important for Thalassaem­ia patients for the removal of excess iron deposits gathered in vital organs of patients as a result of frequent blood transfusio­ns needed for the treatmento­f thedisease.

This Drug infusion system has won the Engineerin­g Excellence Award – 2012 that was presented by the Institutio­n of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), for its manufactur­ing excellence.

The awards winning drug infusion system was developed by the Research and Developmen­t Unit of the Sri Lanka Navy. It has brought about a great deal of relief to many patients who could not afford the expensive system. This equipment has been manufactur­ed at a relatively low unit cost of approximat­ely Rs. 4,500; whereas imported equipment of its kind would cost over Rs. 50,000 per unit.

The Navy said in a statement that it fulfils its national obligation­s in many spheres and contribute­s to the developmen­t of the nation.

The Navy’s venturing into the field of medical research and technology successful­ly sets an example for other institutio­ns and profession­als as well. The Navy would continue to contribute to serve the nation in the same vein as it did to liberate the nation from terrorism, the statements­aid.

The award was received by the Director General Training of the Sri Lanka Navy, Real Admiral M.U.K.B. Bandara at the IESL’s 106th Annual sessions which were held at the BMICH on October 19, 2012.
