Bandula seeks end to school rivalry

Education Minister Bandula Gunawarden­a yesterday advised school authoritie­s of Royal and Thurstan Colleges to

immediatel­y hold a parentteac­hers meeting today (Friday) with all school seniors of each school to resolve the recent conflict between students of the two schools.

Parents and students of Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 of both schools would meet with their respective school principals and teachers today to discuss the conflict between the students of the two schools which is said to have continued for several weeks before intensifyi­ng last Tuesday.

Minister Gunawarden­a made the request after a clash between a large group of students from both schools on Tuesday left five students and a police officer injured. The students had pelted stones at each other causing a chaotic

situation which led to the closing down of both schools for two consecutiv­e days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It is reported that the clash was due to personal reasons.

Meanwhile, Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said if a similar incident occurred in the future those involved would be immediatel­y apprehende­d and produced in court.
