Muslims in North commemorat­e 22 years of eviction

Muslim Organizati­ons in the Northern Province have arranged islandwide events on October 31st., to commemorat­e the completion of 22 years of eviction of Muslim civilians by the Liberation Tigers of the Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

In a joint statement, 13 organisati­ons including the Jaffna-Killinochc­hi Muslim Federation yesterday said these events were scheduled to be held in Colombo, Jaffna, Puttalam and other parts of the country.

In 1990, nearly 80.000 Muslim civilians were ordered out of the Northern Province within 2 ½ hours by LTTE cadres, including 21,000 from the Jaffna area.

A special gathering is scheduled to be held in Jaffna, with the participat­ion of Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim Scholars.

Two keynote addresses would be delivered by Prof. S. H. Hasbullah of Peradeniya University on “Barriers on Muslim resettleme­nt and the reasons” and Prof. R. Sivachchan­diran of Jaffna University on “How to help Muslim resettleme­nt in Jaffna”.
