Meeting becomes a farce
The much hyped-up meeting between Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials and representatives from SLC’s member clubs to be presided over by the Sports Minister yesterday was touted to be a crucial moment for Sri Lanka’s cricket future, but turned out be a farce as the Minister kept away and no firm decision was taken.
The proposal to change the structure had been taken by SLC’s Cricket Committee which advices SLC on the game.
SLC Executive Committee had ratified a decision to change the structure of the country’s domestic tournaments and the new format was to be adopted for next season according to a circular sent out to clubs by SLC’s tournament committee.
However a majority of the clubs objected to the changes, claiming it affected the clubs and players and called for a cancellation of the new rules or a postponement in implementing them.

The clubs appealed to the Minister to intervene and the Minister had advised SLC to put the plans on hold and get the consent of the clubs to the proposed changes. Minister himself was to attend yesterday’s meeting to discuss the issue.
But cricket officials and club members could not come to an agreement on the issue yesterday and a decision was taken for the club members to discuss the changes with the SLC Cricket Committee and iron out the problems before any implementation of the new rules.
Each club will separately meet with the SLC Cricket Committee and have a one-on-one discussion in the coming weeks.
