The travel and leisure arm of Expolanka Holdings PLC’s subsidiary Akquasun Holidays India (Pvt.) attained top honors at the recently concluded World Travel Awards (WTA).

The World Travel Awards (WTA) that acknowledges rewards and celebrates excellence in the global travel and tourism industry, awarded Akquasun the honor of being the foremost emerging destination management company in Asia.

Akquasun was one of many new ventures Expolanka undertook within the 2011/12 financial year. Fifty percent stake with controlling interest was acquired by the conglomerate in May of 2012 for a consideration of USD $ 915,000.

Inaugurated in 2005, Akquasun began as a consolidator for a DMC in Mauritius for the Indian market and within a short period of time grew into the foremost global DMC company. Adopting a Business-to-Business approach Akquasun assists tour operators and agents in providing hotel bookings, back to back tours, transfers and excursions, luxury holidays, special interest tours and events.

Through the acquisition, Expolanka is now able to better penetrate the South Asian, Chinese and Middle Eastern inbound and outbound operations in the travel and leisure segment.

During the previous financial year, Expolanka acquired 49 percent controlling stake of Classic Maldives and further launched Expo Rail –a luxury carriage service that operates in Colombo to Kandy, Trincomalee, Badulla and Vavuniya routes.
