Galenbindunuwewa garbage problem

He admitted that the removal of garbage in the area had been crippled for a long time after the sale by auction of the council vehicles and other movable property on court order to pay arrears due to a contractor. Commenting on a protest staged by the residents of Hingurugamuwa area against haphazard dumping of garbage in the heart of the village, Chairman Namal Wijewardene said the previous regime of the Pradeshiya Sabha was responsible for this situation. He said even a big slice of the funds provided by the Central Environment Authority was used to pay the contractor on court order.
Residents of Hinguruwewa staged a protest against using an abandoned gravel mine in the heart of the village as the dumping ground of the Galenbindunuwewa Pradeshiya Sabha.
They accused the Pradeshiya Sabha of haphazard garbage removal creating a health hazard affecting a large population. They said the health authorities that take legal action against the ordinary people if a coconut shell filled with water was found in a home garden were moribund about the old gravel mine filled with garbage and stagnant water.
The chairman who apologized to the Hinguruwewa villagers for the inconvenience caused by the dumping ground promised to find a solution soon. He said he made representations in this regard to the relevant authorities.
