Dharmaraja and Mahamaya excel at Junior Athletics meet

hamaya Girls College hold sway with 147 points and had a clear lead of 59 points over the second placed Girls High School who could only muster 87 points.

A total of ten meet records were lowered with the first day accounting for 7 of them despite the wet conditions underfoot.

Dharmaraja College and Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy, excelled at the Kandy District Kids and Junior Athletic Championsh­ip organised by the Kandy District Athletic Associatio­n and worked off at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy.

Chief Minister of the Central Provincial who was the Chief Guest at the awards ceremony speaking on the occasion said that more children should take to athletics which is one sport in which every school, whether big or small participat­es.

“If you can run, you are an athlete and it is thereafter you will have to develop yourself using the latest techniques to improve your skills. There should be no excuse that you cannot participat­e in athletics which is the simplest form of sport which develops as you grow up,” he said.

“Our athletes have brought honour to the country winning medals at the highest level like the Olympic Games where Susanthika Jayasinghe and Duncan White won medals.
