KT BROWN SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES ‘CUT THE CLOTH’ EXHIBITION

- BY MIRO DOL

Kanchana Thalpawila and her team at KT Brown celebrated 3 years of success last Friday night at the Barefoot Gallery. Celebrating with family, close friends, customers and industry professionals, Kanchana and her team made sure to give us all a night to remember. The preview that took place on friday night included a mini fashion show and cocktails to celebrate the label that Kanchana built from humble beginnings in Nugegoda. The fashion show demonstrated how the designer and her team took circles and squares and draped beautiful pieces of art. This was a great insight for everyone present, into what goes on behind closed doors at a designers workshop. Too often designers and their hard work go unnoticed or aren't given due recognition.

With this unusual demonstration, Kanchana made us all stand up and take notice. Famed for her unusual cuts as she is for her unorthodox take on the female silhouette, Kanchana demonstrated how the design process unravelled at her workshop. It was truly an amazing experience watching the designers in action as they took a simple piece of fabric and transformed it into a beautiful garment.Supported by Dulux, Kanchana and her team put up an insightful weekend exhibition to celebrate the art of pattern making. The exhibition paid tribute to iconic fashion moments from the fashion revolution in the 1950's. The exhibition opened to the public on Saturday 3rd November and closed on Sunday 4th November. In a hope to raise more awareness and importance on the elements of Pattern Making which is seriously undermined in our country; ‘Cut the Cloth' definitely shed some light on what goes on in a design workshop. Pattern making and precision cutting helps bring out the best in a fabric, depending on how well you know how to treat it. And one must work with a variety of fabrics before mastering the art of cutting a perfectly fitting garment. The exhibition was indeed successful in achieving its objectives of educating all fashion students, consumers, avid fashionistas and industry professionals on the most fundamental aspects of the design process at KT Brown.
