Opposition leader vows to take “Wipakshaye Wirodaya” campaign against the Rajapaksa regime.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the People’s Assembly at the New Town Hall in Colombo, Mr. Wickremesinghe said conflicts had arisen in most fields such as education, health and prison but no one spoke about it in Parliament.
“This Parliament does not uphold people’s sovereignty. If the sovereignty rests with the people, the Parliament should work according to the peoples’ aspirations. At present, more than 100 MPs enjoy government portfolios in Parliament but keep silent over peoples’ issues. Twenty to 30 new MPs who are without portfolios cannot achieve anything either. Some UNP and TNA MPs have been given government perks to keep them silent,” he charged. “As the peoples’ sovereignty was not upheld by this ruling mechanism, various organisations sprang up like this throughout the world. And the regimes are toppled through those organisations. So we have also organised a movement to topple this anti-people regime, he added.
Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne said all allocations for welfare have been cut down in the budget and people have been made debtors. Speaking about the Divi Neguma he said the government could not proceed without Divi Neguma as most of the projects in this budget functions under this Bill.
