Singer wins big at ...

-

Consumer durables giant Singer Sri Lanka recently picked up a slew of prestigious accolades at the Best Corporate Citizen Awards held by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. In addition to being selected as the first runner-up amongst Sri Lanka’s Top Ten Corporate Citizens, the company also won the first place in the majority of key judging categories, including the ‘Community Relations and CSR’ category and the ‘Customer and Supplier Relations’ category. Singer Sri Lanka was also awarded the first place in the ‘Social: People and CSR’ sector.

Singer Sri Lanka is woven into the very fabric of Sri Lankan society, touching millions of Sri Lankan lives daily. As a result, the company takes a ‘big picture’ view of its responsibilities. Indeed, instead of investing resources in ad hoc or one-off projects, Singer Sri Lanka has always focused on maximizing its positive impact by creating building blocks that can empower Sri Lanka’s sustainability. This holistic approach can be seen in the company’s involvement in environmental sustainability, employee empowerment, customer and supplier engagement, support for the community, youth development and corporate governance.

For example, the leading role played by the company in the National E-Waste Management Programme illustrates how Singer Sri Lanka puts the pieces together in order to help create a more vibrant Sri Lanka. Equipped with a thorough understanding of the environmental lifecycle of electronic products, which unfortunately may include the possibility of improper disposal, the company partnered with the Central Environmental Authority in order to minimize any negative impacts. By mobilizing its workforce as well as its huge customer base, Singer Sri Lanka has, so far, succeeded in collecting 174 tons, the most by any corporate partner.

Another key initiative championed by Singer Sri Lanka is its ‘100 Schools’ project, which succeeded the ‘160 Schools’ project initiated in 2011. These projects focused on building educational infrastructure in schools around the nation. From constructing school buildings and children’s parks to installing water supply systems and donation musical instruments, the company leveraged its financial and human resources to create a difference. Having used its industry-best retail and service networks to identify the neediest schools in Sri Lanka, Singer worked hand-in-hand with community stakeholders, including parents, teachers and students to help improve education standards in areas where they were most lacking.

The Singer name has become synonymous with sport in Sri Lanka. Having invested more than a billion rupees in Sri Lankan sports teams, events, and infrastructure, the company has focused on sustainable improvements and continuous progression, putting the pieces together to build winning teams and a winning sporting spirit.

The range of sports that the company is involved with includes rugby, cricket, motor racing, rowing, tennis, badminton, athletics and basketball. From the company’s sponsorship of the 1996 Cricket World Cup winning team to its backing of schools rugby, it is evident that Singer’s ‘big picture’ philosophy has paid huge dividends for sports in Sri Lanka.
