ALLERGIC REACTION AMONG SCHOOL KIDS NOT FROM EXTERNAL SOURCE : HEALTH MINISTRYS

- BY SANDUN A. JAYASEKERA

Preliminary epidemiological and micro-biologic tests conducted by the Health Ministry experts on the recent complaints of allergic reactions by school children from various parts of the country had revealed that the alleged complications had not been caused due to any parasite, bacteria, chemical contamination or climate influence. It was also revealed that only a few children in one of these schools had shown signs of contamination.

A discussion was held yesterday at the Health Ministry among micro biologists, entomologists, epidemiologists and psychologists who, participated in the medical studies at schools where allergic reactions were reported among students. The discussion was chaired by Health Minis- ter Maithripala Sirisena. Health Ministry spokesman Dharma Wanninayaka said that medical studies were conducted in Kandy, Gampola, Weligepola, Ampara, Ratnapura and Colombo based on complaints received from school children. The medical specialists pointed out that the alleged complications may have caused due to mental reasons than allergic reactions as a majority of complainants were made by junior level students. It is possible that they could imitate anyone or anything when they see something peculiar. These kinds of incidents are common among children of this agegroup, the specialists had contended.

The medical teams have tested specimens obtained from water, soil, dust, etc as well as the school uniforms worn by students. The medical tests are continuing, Mr. Wanninayaka said.
