Seventh Cambrian CCW Sixes begins today

The annual inter-club six a side cricket tournament organized by the Cambrian Cricket Wing (CCW) is scheduled to be worked off from today at the Prince of Wales ground in Moratuwa. The two day tournament which ushers the inter-club cricket season in will see 24 teams in the fray which include some of the top Premier clubs and some teams from the lower division vying for honours.

The annual inter-club six a side cricket tournament organized by the Cambrian Cricket Wing (CCW) is scheduled to be worked off from today at the Prince of Wales ground in Moratuwa.

The two day tournament which ushers the inter-club cricket season in will see 24 teams in the fray which include some of the top Premier clubs and some teams from the lower division vying for honours.

The tournament which began in 2006 is being held for the seventh successive year which has become popular and a much looked forward to event by the club cricketers and also by the cricket crazy supporters of Moratuwa.

Bandula de Silva speaking at the press briefing stated that the CCW was inaugurate­d in the year 2000 by renowned past cricketers of Prince of Wales with the support of well wishers with the aim of assisting cricket and sports activities at Prince of Wales. Speaking further he emphasized that in fact it was a fund raising event to support the schools to contribute cricket materials, payment of salaries to the coach and for other needs involving cricket.

Bandula thanked the main sponsor Free Lanka Granite along with co sponsors U.S.S. Services (Pvt) Ltd, HNB Assurance and Sanvik Group who have been supporting the tournament for the last four years for having come forward to make this tournament a success.

The past six tournament­s have the participat­ion of past and current national players of the calibre of Sanath Jaya- suriya, Mahela Jayawarden­a, T.M. Dilshan, Chamara Silva, Nuwan Zoysa, Ajantha Mendis, Seekkuge Prasanna, Upul Tharanga, Dhammika Prasad and a host of other top players.

Colts had the honour of winning the title at the inaugural tournament and the next three years saw Bloomfield taking the title, Panadura emerge champion in 2010 while Saracens SC won it last year.

Apart from the trophies which are on offer the winning team will receive a cash award of Rs. 100,000/- and the runner up Rs. 50,000/-. Individual cash prizes of Rs. 10,000/will be awarded to the best batsman, bowler, man of the series and the player who hit the highest number of sixes.

Badureliya CC and host Old Cambrians will clash in the first match of the tournament. The 24 teams in the fray are Saracens SC, Badureliya CC, Old Cambrians, Sebastiani­tes, Lankan CC, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, CCC, SSC, Police SC, Moors SC and Army.The bottom half comprises Moratuwa SC, Army, Bloomfield, Galle CC, Ragama CC, NCC, Chilaw Marians, Colts, Tamil Union, Air Force, Navy, Panadura SC, Kurunegala YCC and BRC.
