US - TNA TO REVIEW UNHRC RESOLUTION

Ahead of the next session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, the United States has decided to hold talks with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for a review of action being taken by the government of Sri Lanka in conformity with the resolution adopted early this year,

officials said yesterday.

The US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka was adopted at the UNHRC session in March this year.

The resolution called for the implementa­tion of constructi­ve recommenda­tions by the Lessons Learnt and Reconcilia­tion Commission (LLRC) and addressing accountabi­lity issues during the last stage of the war.

United Nations High Commission­er for Human Rights Navi Pillay is expected to submit a report on Sri Lanka to the next session scheduled for March, 2013.

A TNA delegation led by R. Sampanthan also visited the US on an invitation by the State Department last year.

The TNA visited India last month and held talks with leaders of that country on the political situation here. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also participat­ed in talks with the TNA.
