Multi - facted artiste NUWAN
NuwanWijesiri who is known for his multi-faceted talents in arts says that he became a singer due to the influence of pioneer actress Rukmani Devi.
“I studied at Siddamulla Madduma Bandara Vidyalaya and later did my ALs at Kottawa Dharmapala Vidyalaya. During this period I studied dancing under Kulasiri Budawatte and played the main role in Parakrama Niriella’s ‘SeriVanija’tele drama.My first stage play was‘Bakmahe Donkaraya’.
HOW DID YOU BECOME A SINGER?
I met Rukmani Devi’s sister Helen Nilanthi Daniles when I was working at the Geetha film journal of Geetha Kumarasinghe. Later I sang duets of Rukmani Devi at stage shows and other events. Her niece Kanchana Fernando also helped me. From 2001 onwards I have held commemorative events annually to mark the death anniversary of Rukmani Devi. I use the opportunity to pay tribute to two veteran film or music personalities. My next event will be held on January 15 next year. I hope to felicitate two veterans Sujatha Wijesekara and Seetha Kumari Ehelepola during the event. I did a CD titled‘Amma Sandai’ for which all the songs were penned by Hemasri de Alwis. I first acted in the movie Jeevan Malli and later followed it up withTaxi Drver, Surayahana Gini Ganee, King Hunther, Sasala Rekha and others.

I have acted in about 14 tele dramas including Wasuda and Paramitha.
ABOUT LOVE AND MARRIAGE?
I am a busy man. I am looking for a partner who will understand me and look after my mother with love. I am the youngest in a family of six boys. Whenever I am free I spend my time looking after the needs of my mother.
WHAT ARE YOUR PRESENT COMMITMENTS?
I am rehearsing my own stage play called ‘Praveshamen’ in which I play ten different characters. Samanlatha Hettiarachchi plays the lead role in it. In addition I act inYes Madam and Ruwan Hewage’s ‘Bahiravi’ movie and Sanjula Kumararatne’s stage play‘2012 LokaVinashaya’. In addition I engage in dubbing and modelling too. I am grateful to all who have helped me in my journey to reach this position today.
