STF cracks major counterfei­t racket by Africans

In a major operation carried out near a five star hotel in the Galle Face area, the Special Task Force (STF) yesterday busted a major counterfei­t notes racket by Africans and seized more than 450 counterfei­t US Dollar notes.

The STF said those arrested were a man from Cameroon and a woman from Mali and seized 420,200 high quality printing paper, which was believed to have been used in making counterfei­t notes hidden inside their car.

STF officers also found three digital safe lockers, three mobile phones and several US dollars and Euros.

The raid was carried out by a team led by Inspector Nadeeka Silva under the directions of SP Varuna Jayasunder­e. The two Africans were handed over to the CID. There have been a number of cases recently where the police had arrested Africans mostly with expired visas engaging in such rackets.

believed to be overstayin­g their visas after having entered the country with another group of Africans.

Police said the informatio­n gathered from the two suspects would lead to other foreigners who are carrying out criminal activities in this country.
