Only the truth will set us free

-

Through the past saga in Sri Lankan politics, we have seen politicians of every hue and shade when having being voted into power by the people to serve them, they choose instead to abdicate their responsibilities. The voters and party interests are forgotten. The intelligent reader needs ask whether this is not done for personal gain. Such politicians may cease to be true representatives of the people.

The legislature has to maintain its identity. In other words, it’s called to deliberate and take decisions of its own. It loses its purpose if it exists to serve the executive and do whatever it wants. That would be tantamount to worship of the executive. Worship is where one brings into obedience one’s mind, will and intellect under the power of the executive, to which obeisance is offered. It is like saying I would do whatever is required – right or wrong, as long as I receive gratification and favour.

History is replete with some rulers, or monarchs who wanted to be acknowledged as gods. When anyone refused to do so they were persecuted or killed. The Caesars and Pharaohs of ancient times believed they were gods reincarnated as humans. The Romans acknowledged Caesar as Lord. Anyone who thought otherwise was done to death. Worship is reserved only for god; where one makes the decision to serve only the higher power. True worship is where we allow our will, mind and intellect to belong to and serve that Supreme Being. In other words obedience is given to only the truth. Human beings have to submit their will only to truth and desire to serve it only. In this, one dies to the ego and the inordinate hunger for power and recognition, which finally people and their dreams.

The danger will be overwhelming for those wanting to be like the Caesars and Pharaohs of modern times. It’s the ever present seed lying dormant in every human heart, waiting for a suitable opportunity. When such an environment is provided dictatorial tendencies emerge. The people or subjects are then enticed to serve such. They become so mesmerized, capable of serving falsehood and evil. People like Hitler did exactly that and unwittingly got the people to becomemonsters. He was so popular that they literally worshiped him. Surprisingly the land had such great philosophers, scientists, musicians and people of high intellectual capacity, yet their adulation and willingness to do anything he asked brought on the activity of demons that unleashed destruction and mayhem – this is the choice one is called to make for life or death; freedom or bondage; to serve the truth or some demi gods.
