Sri Lanka school girls win bronze in Malaysia
Sri Lanka Schools Girls under 15 “Golds” team won a bronze at the 39th Pesta USM International Hockey Sevens organized by the University of Science of Malaysia and worked off in Penang this week.
Schools under 18 and under 15 hockey teams from a number of countries in the region participated in this major hockey championship which was conducted in six courts simultaneously in a very large sports complex.
Former Sri Lanka hockey goalkeeper Anurudda Herath who accompanied the Sri Lanka schools teams as the coach said what was most striking was that the matches were worked dead on schedule and there was no time delay and dragging of the ceremonies. Ms. Padma Nawaratne another former national player accompanied the team as Manageress cum Chief de Mission.
Sri Lanka Schools teams did well in the preliminary rounds which was played on a league basis but was eliminated in the knock out stage.
It was the Sri Lanka Schools Girls under 15 “Golds’ which kept the country’s flag flying by finishing as Group F Champions in the league stage and was successful upto the semi finals when they won a bronze.
The Sri Lanka Schools under 15 “Golds’ team was captained by Dilrukshi Karunanayake of Christ Church College, Matale. The other members were Sanduni Anuthara, Akshi Nanayakkara, Dasuni Pawangi, Sandurangi Hewagama, Chammi Wasana, Jayagiri Senaratne, Nishali Dahanayake, Sachini Nuwanthika.
