- BY SUNIL THANTRIARACHCHI

When the LTTE rule prevailed in the country beyond Vavuniya the organisation had law courts enforcing their law, but today the entire country is engulfed in a similar situation, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

Addressing a public meeting organised by Kalutara UNP organiser and Provincial Council Member Laxman Annada Wijemanna to protest against the government interference with the Judiciary, he said the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa violated the Constitution and the standing orders.

“The UNP government in 1978 introduced a new Constitution, but the then President did not expect to remove judges. If we really respect the law we must amend the Standing Orders and pass new regulations. This government does not respect the law or the fundamentals of democracy. At this crucial juncture the people should rally round the UNP and strengthen it to save democracy in the country from this danger,” he said.

Provincial Council Members Luxman Ananda, Attorney at Law Srinath Perera, Democtratic People’s Party Parliamentarian Mano Ganesan, Leader of the United People’s Front Premasiri Hapuarachchi, Leader of the Nava Sihala Urumaya Sarath Manamendra and Neil Wijetilleka of the United Socialist Party, addressed the gathering.
