Former Thomian sportsman and medical practitioner from Kandy Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte was elected for a record 19th time as the President of the Kandy Sports Club at the Annual General Meeting held at Nittawela yesterday.

Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte held this post for 18 years with his first tenure of office starting in 1990 and broke his own record this year. He has held this post of President for the most number of times and the nearest is late Chandra Wijenaike who has held it for five years in three different terms.

Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte was first appointed President in 1990 and he continued upto 1994. Then he was re-elected again in 1997 and 1998. Next he took over this post from 2000 to 2004 before his next term in office from 2006 to 2008. After a year’s break due to ill health he took over the reins in 2010 till he was re-elected in 2013 for the 19th time.

During Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte’s reign as President, the club won the Clifford Cup in 1992 and has been many times been the triple champs and has also won the double. The infrastructure too has undergone vast changes within a number of pavilions coming up and even the Singer Sri Lankan International Rugby Sevens were conducted for nine years.

The Trustee of the Club, Malik Samarawickrama speaking as the protem Chairman said that one of the main reasons for not winning the Rugby league title was that their foreign players put up a disappointing display and they were not up to standard. The ultimate winners of the League title Havelocks Sports Club had top-class foreign players and this made the difference. They lost to Havelocks Sports Club after 20 years. This year they have found a new coach in New Zealander Neil Footie who is no stranger to Kandy having coached the Trinity College rugby team and they hope to bring back the League title which they could not retain last season. This club will be captained by Gayan Weeraratne and he also thanked the Committee for its wonderful support.
