A/L results create snag in university admissions
This oddity in the commerce stream results could have been deliberately committed by the government to open up avenues for private universities
The Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) yesterday expressed their concern over an alleged abnormality in the 2012 G.C.E. A/L results, claiming the results are indicating signs of a possible complication in university entrance that could pave way to the promotion of private universities.
IUSF Convener Sanjeewa Bandara speaking to Daily Mirror said, “The pass rate of commerce stream this year has increased quite abnormally and there are close to 4000 candidates who have obtained 3As in the commerce stream. During previous years, even those who obtained two As and one B could enter university whereas this year, it seems even those who have three As will not be able to enter a state university due to restrictions in admissions.”
Quoting an example, Bandara said a candidate in the Gampaha District who has been ranked 1064th in the district has obtained three As, but will most probably lose the chance to enter a State university as only about 500 would be admitted from the entire district.
He said a similar trend could be observed in almost the entire country.
He said that in the wake of the government’s plans to decrease student intake from Arts and Commerce streams, this abnormality raised definite questions of foul play.
He also stated this oddity in the commerce stream results could have been deliberately committed by the government to open up avenues for private universities as

most students would be compelled to enter private universities to continue their higher studies, when they were not admitted to State universities even with excellent results.
“This abnormality has not been observed during previous years. Therefore it is up to the government to probe into this situation and ensure all those who have obtained three As are granted university admissions,” he said.
