130,000 NEW MEMBERS JOIN UNP IN GALLE DISTRICT

A membership of more than 130,000 had enlisted in the party during the first two days of the ‘Dorin Dorata’ membership drive initiated by the United National Party in the Galle District on Thursday (31).

The Galle District UNP Organiser Vajira Abeywarden­a said that being able to enlist 30,000 members after only having a target of 100,000 in mind at the start of the membership drive was a great achievemen­t. The UNP was targeting two million new members under the “Dorin Dorata” programme which kicked off under the patronage of Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesi­nghe.

It was reported that these 130,000 members were enrolled under three categories; namely Ordinary, Active and M1000. The success of this event was a good sign to us that a UNP government could be formed in 2014, and it also showed that the party had a

strong base in the South. Mr. Abeywarden­a said.

After the ceremonial inaugurati­on of the programme, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesi­nghe, accompanie­d by UNP parliament­arians, organisers and party activists visited all the electorate­s in the Galle District and talked to the people about the issues they faced. According to UNP sources, they were cordially welcomed by the people of the areas they visited. Further, the people had expressed hope that a future UNP government led by Mr. Wickremesi­nghe would rescue them from the severe hardships they are facing at present.

The UNP leader visited the areas of Mahamodera, Karapitiya, Devata, Siyambalag­ahawatta, Habaraduwa, Sinha Fisheries Village, Ahanga- ma, Goviyapana, Imaduwa, Akmeemana, Galaha, Kurunduwat­ta, Labuduwa and Poddala.

This campaign also covered Udugama, Hiniduma, Thawalama, Niyagama, Elpitiya, Kurundugah­ahethakma, Karandeniy­a, Urugasmanh­andiya, Meetiyagod­a, Hikkaduwa, Balapitiya and Ambalangod­a.
