SRIMALEE Writing for a right cause

- By Vasantha Wimalasinghe

Young author Srimalee Karunanayke who released her maiden novel ‘Idorayata Pipi Kusuma’ last week said the cruelties and callous attitudes of people in this society provoked her to write this novel based on true incidents, and she has dedicated it to all daughters of this society who are trying hard to stand on their own feet.

WHAT IS THE BASE TO THIS STORY?

This is based on a true story. The main character is Sandali. Her character will certainly convey an important message to the people of the country. She is a girl who tries to safeguard her dignity and self-respect in her mission to win the challenges in life. Readers will have to decide whether destiny or will power will take one forward in life.

YOUR PASSION FOR WRITING?

Even as a student at Kurunegala Maliyadewa I used to write to papers and magazines. This is my first novel. I have some other novels also lined up for publication. They are in fact being printed now.I have formed my own publishing house called Srimalee Publishers. My aim is not to make money but to publish my books.I might expand it in the future.

HAVEN’T’ YOU WRITTEN ANY SCRIPTS SUITABLE FOR FILMS OR TELE DRAMAS?

I have, but who is willing to give a helping hand to newcomers? A future novel of mine will be ideal for a tele drama script and I hope that dream will also be realized.

“I am grateful to Saman Kumara Liyanage who guided me in this field of writing. I am also thankful to Karunaratne D. Philip, Anton Samson, my brother Duminda and cousins Chaminda and Samarasiri. My objective is to make some worthwhile contribution to society."
