NABBED BEGGING WITH HIRED CHILD

The railway security force nabbed a man yesterday while he was begging inside a train bound for Colombo from Negombo carrying a two year old child obtained on hire.

The beggar was apprehende­d by Anura Premaratne, the assistant director of the railway security force, and inspector E. M. U. J. A. Ekanayake on a complaint made by some commuters.

was carrying had been handed over to O. K. Lalith Kumara who is in charge of this security force in Colombo Fort.

The preliminar­y questionin­g of the child revealed conflictin­g details, As the child appeared to be depressed she had been handed over to the child care and probation unit. At the time of the arrest the security staff had found Rs 1000 in the beggar’s possession. It was believed that the man had boarded the train at Ragama and the money had been collected from the passengers. The man had been asking the passengers for money to feed and maintain the child. The beggar was identified as Jayasinghe Arachchige Anura Kumara of Ragama. He was produced before Maligakand­a Magistrate Ayesha Abdeen testerday and she ordered that he be remanded until February 14.
