SELF-HELP AT THE MAHAWELIGA­MA JUNIOR SCHOOL

While authoritie­s slumber, people of Serunuwara rise to the task

Residents of the area have taken steps to construct a building for the Mahaweliga­ma Junior School in Serunuwara, fulfilling a long standing need. The school establishe­d more than a year ago is facing problems for want of adequate physical resources and teachers.

Mahaweliga­ma Junior School under the 1000 secondary school programme. The junior school with a strength of 280 students from Grade One to Grade Five is located in a small building is congested, inconvenie­ncing students. Several classes are held in the corridors and in the school grounds. The secretary of the school developmen­t society M.D.Anuruddha said they collected Rs.2000 each from the parents to fund the project implemente­d with the help of a foreign NGO.
