Questions prevail around Principal’s resignatio­n

Principal of the Handungamu­wa Maha Vidyalaya in the Wilgamuwa education zone Wasantha Ekanayaka has decided to resign from his post as a mark of protest against the removal of his school from the secondary school programme, the arbitrary transfers of teachers and political interferen­ce in school administra­tion. He said he would hand in his resignatio­n to the Zonal Director Harris Alagoda immediatel­y.

resignatio­n would be an eye opener to politician­s and authoritie­s who meted out serious injustices to children from low-income families. He pointed out that al- though he was subject to political victimizat­ion, poor children should not be affected by such action. He went on to say that he held classes after school to raise the standard of learning and knowledge among the children and developed the school with the help of parents.

However, Matale District Parliament­arian and Laggala SLFP organizer Laxman Wasantha said that parents had made several allegation­s against the principal for having a political agenda and promoting his political views in the school. He said he raised the issue in Parliament and informed the Education Department. Meanwhile residents of the area who met yesterday decided not to send their children to school if the principal resigned. The Wilgamuwa zonal education director was not available for comment.
