Kesbewa Tank restoration to achieve dual-purpose
The Kesbewa Tank is to be redeveloped to not only provide water for agricultural purposes in the area but also as a recreational centre for the residents, the Western Provincial Ministry of Agriculture, Agrarian Development, Minor Irrigation, Industries and Environmental Affairs yesterday said.
According to the Ministry, Rs. 8 million has been set aside for the development of the tank which is being built on 15 acres of land. This land had almost been abandoned in the past without making any use of it.
“The tank is filled with plants and there is a lot of mud that has settled at the bottom of the tank that it cannot be used any longer,” Western Provincial Minister Udaya Gammanpila said.
Mr. Gammanpila said the tank could provide water facilities to over 120 acres of land for paddy cultivation, after it has been cleared.
He further said irrigation facilities could also be provided for lands in Polgasowita, Holombuwa and Kodurawa areas through this scheme.
“We also hope to build concrete banks and walkways for the public. A car park and other recreational facilities will also be established,” he said.
The Minister said some lands from the surrounding area would have to be taken over by the government for the purpose of re-developing the tank. “It is also a beautification project because we want people to have a quiet atmosphere when they travel through Kesbewa. This will turn Kesbewa into a recreational area which also provides vital irrigation facilities to the surrounding areas,” The Minister said.
