The students union and five faculty unions of the Sabaragamuwa University have been suspended since Thursday night, a university administration official said yesterday.

According to the official, the decision to suspend the student unions had been made due to the student activists engaging in illegal activities. "They were violating the disciplinary regulations of the university such as convening student union meetings without the permission of the Vice

Chancellor and forcing female students to attend these meetings," the official said.

However, Sabaragamuwa University Students' Union representative Haritha Prabath, yesterday dismissed the allegations and said the reason for the suspension was the repeated complaints made by them to the university administration concerning grievances of students.

"The administration has taken steps to double the hostel fees of students and have imposed regulations that have resulted in a heavy blow to the university's autocracy. They have also seriously cut down on the fresh intake of students this year which we believe is a violation of a youth's right to education. Hence we have repetitively lodged complaints to the administration," he said.

The undergraduates staged a protest within the university premises yesterday urging the administration to lift the suspension of the student unions.

Among the five faculty unions that have been suspended are the Geomatics, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, Agriculture and Management studies.
