SCIENCE COLLEGE IN STUNNING 36-19WIN OVER ROYAL

- BY M. SHAMIL AMIT

Science College Mount Lavinia lived up to their reputation as giant killers of the schools rugby arena opening their Singer Under 20 season by stunning Royal College in their own den at the Royal Sports Complex with a massive 36 points to 19 victory.

Science took a 19-12 lead at lemons and made up their points through three goals and three tries as against to a goal, drop goal and three penalties by Royal.

The Mount Lavinia team meant business when they began even though the Royalists made the first move through a penalty booted by skipper Rimzi Jamaldeen with the game 11 minutes old.

From there on Science College went on the rampage as they ran circles round the Royalists when they posted two tries with- in a space of ten minutes through centre Chathuranga Gomes and No 8 G. Thilanka with Royal’s reply being a penalty booted by Jamaldeen.

Royal was unable to beat the Science defence and were able to make up their scoring through two penalties by Jamaldeen. But even then Science College kept on increasing the lead when second-row R. Singhe went over for try just before the short whistle which he himself converted.

The second half saw the game being played with tempers flaring as it took over 20 minutes for the scoring to be done and it was Science who succeeded with back to back tries from R. Perera and M. Fernando.

Royal decreased the lead through a try by Azman Khan before B. Karunatileke sealed the game for Science with a last minute try and Chathuranga Gomes doing the finishing touches.

St Joseph’s down Kingswood

St Joseph’s too began their Under 20 rugby season campaign with a close 27-21 win over Kingswood in the match played at Longdon Place yesterday. St Joseph’s having taken a 157 lead at the breather accumulated their points through two goals, two tries and a penalty to the three goals by Kingswood.

Skipper and second row Jason Melder was in fine form when he scored three of the four tries for his side with full back Shamilka Kurumbalapitiya scoring the other try while fly half Dulip Fernando put over the conversions and penalty.

For Kingswood centre Asela Wijesinghe, fly half Aruna Perera and their second centre scored the tries with Asela and Aruna putting over the conversions.
