New hope; Pope of the Poor

- Dear Cardinal Ranjith, Delip Viraj Fernando

I am writing to you as a NonCatholic, but had interest in the recent election of the Pope, for a start you should read the editorial of the Daily Mirror. New Hope; Pope of the Poor. You were being hinted as a dark horse. Just hype! The new Pope Francis though relatively unknown, was an instant hit because of his humility and sincerity that he showed on day one. Lauded by many for his humility and austerity, the 76-year-old from Argentina will certainly look to emulate one of his namesakes, St. Francis of Assisi. His first public words to the thousands cheering in St. Peter’s Square today were characteristically humble: “Thank you for the welcome.” With that, the 266th papacy has begun. I think you should learn from the new Pope to be humble and more accessible to the poor. Pope Francis did not live in a Bishop’s palace, he did not have an official car and when he was elected as a Cardinal he did not charter an aircraft to take people to the Vatican. Instead he wanted the money given to the poor. He did not want structures put up to welcome him. He did not surround himself with rich people after his elevation. No celebrations and public events were held, other than a simple mass. He never got involved in politics, instead he stood up for the poor and focused on building the church. If you are to make the country proud of you and hope to become the next leader of the catholic world, you have a lot of work to do, make a good start and emulate Pope Francis from now on.
