Lanka Hospitals performs 400th kidney transplant
Lanka Hospitals PLC, a publiclyowned 350-bed multi-specality tertiary care hospital, commemorated its 400 successful kidney transplants recently.
The Kidney Care Unit of Lanka Hospitals says it has successfully performed the highest number of kidney transplants in the private hospital segment, since 2003.
“Lanka Hospital Transplant Unit has completed more than 50 transplants on foreign patients, setting new standards that are the benchmark of world-class care for Sri Lanka’s health industry,” Lanka Hospitals CEO Lakith Peiris said.
Speaking at the press briefing, Upali Kodithuwakku, who underwent the successful 400th kidney transplant at Lanka Hospitals, said that he was on his way to recovery after a successful transplant.

Standard treatment of the Kidney Care Unit include Haemodialysis, which temporarily removes waste, extra salt and water, controls blood pressure and maintains a proper chemical balance. The centre is categorized into four different transplant teams in which each team consists of nephrologists, transplant surgeons and anesthetics.
The unit further perfor ms Laproscopic donor nephrectomy, which enables the kidney from donors to be removed easily with smaller cuts.
According to the Lanka Hospitals’ management, the Kidney Transplant Unit comprises of specialized doctors, nurses and administrative staff, trained and fully skilled to tackle any medical emergency with the help of the state-of-the-art medical equipment, 24 hours a day.
