Questions over death of another Lankan housemaid in Saudi

- BY PALITHA ARIYAWANSA

They said serious doubts had arisen over the statement made by her Saudi employer, the post mortem examination and the photograph accompanying the body showing the woman wearing a Hijab.

The family members said they suspected foul play in the death of a 33year-old Sri Lankan mother of three children who worked as a housemaid in Saudi Arabia.

They said serious doubts had arisen over the statement made by her Saudi employer, the post mortem examination and the photograph accompanying the body showing the woman wearing a Hijab.

The woman had been identified as Karupiah Prabhakaran Shashikala of Moragollawatte in Badulla. Sources revealed that she had obtained this job through a recruit- ment centre in Maradana.

K. Chandrakala (32) said her sister had gone to Saudi Arabia because of economic problems at home and within a month of her going there she had complained that her employer was cruel and that he had regularly harassed her.

“She repeated this complaint whenever she called home. After some time she did not answer the phone but someone else did, saying Shashikala had committed suicide. We feel that she had died about three weeks ago. Her passport had also revealed that she had stayed somewhere in Sri Lanka for about a month prior to her departure to Saudi,” the sister said. The family members expressed their gratitude to Minister Dilan Perera for the assistance provided in bringing the body back.

They said they would be making the necessary complaints soon and were now convinced that the agent had deceived them.
