Restructuring CMC
Some 4000 cadres to lose their jobs
As many as 4000 employees attached to the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will lose their jobs due to the decision taken by the CMC to restructure the cadres at the council.
Secretary of the State Provincial Public Management Assistant Union Wijetileke told Daily Mirror that the number of cadres attached to the council which was around 14,000 earlier is to be dropped to around 8000 after the recent restructuring of cadres. Accordingly the number of management assistants which were 1056 at the CMC earlier had already dropped to 800. He said some cadres lost their jobs as the posts they held had become redundant as a result of the restructure.
He said the State Provincial Public Management Assistant Union had done everything possible to rectify the situation and would continue to do so in the future as well.
Mr. Wijetileke said discussions are continuing at the moment among the unions.
However, he said the unions would take every possible action on behalf of the cadres who have lost their jobs. However, he said they cannot decide on any specific course of action as there might be further changes in the cadre restructuring.
Meanwhile, a senior member of the engineers union of the CMC who did not wish to be named said the restructuring of cadres had been a practice of the CMC every four years for a long time.
