Kelaniya science faculty closed

The Kelaniya University said yesterday that the university’s Science Faculty would be temporaril­y shut down until an inquiry is conducted into the alleged assault on several science faculty hostel students on Thursday night.

A group of unidentifi­ed men broke into a hostel that provided accommodat­ion for science faculty students on Thursday night assaulting several students six of whom were admitted to the Ragama and Kiribathgo­da hospitals due to severe injuries.

University officials said there was concern over the safety of the students and feared that a clash would erupt again and as a result decided to temporaril­y close the faculty

“We have provided additional security to the university premises. The students have complained to us that they feared that there would be another attack. Therefore we have decided to close the faculty temporaril­y,” he said.

He said parents too were concerned about the safety of students and many had requested the university authoritie­s to take precaution­ary measures once the faculty was reopened.
