Kelaniya science faculty closed

The Kelaniya University said yesterday that the university’s Science Faculty would be temporarily shut down until an inquiry is conducted into the alleged assault on several science faculty hostel students on Thursday night.

A group of unidentified men broke into a hostel that provided accommodation for science faculty students on Thursday night assaulting several students six of whom were admitted to the Ragama and Kiribathgoda hospitals due to severe injuries.

University officials said there was concern over the safety of the students and feared that a clash would erupt again and as a result decided to temporarily close the faculty

“We have provided additional security to the university premises. The students have complained to us that they feared that there would be another attack. Therefore we have decided to close the faculty temporarily,” he said.

He said parents too were concerned about the safety of students and many had requested the university authorities to take precautionary measures once the faculty was reopened.
