- BY AUGUSTINE FERNANDO

A 20-year-old woman who developed labour pains had gone to a rural hospital in the midnight but she found no doctor, nurse or attendants to attend to her. But while making her journey to another hospital she had given birth to a child on the way in the threewheeler she was travelling in. Her husband had assisted the woman during the childbirth.

The mother Swarna Disanayaka of Mahakubukkankadawala in Anamaduwa had first gone to the Mahakubukkankadawala Rural Hospital which had no staff.

“This is my second childbirth. I went to the rural hospital with my husband in midnight on June 4. But at the time there was no- doctor, nurse or attendant there. We had to go to the Mundalama Hospital as I felt very uncomfortable and on the way the child was born. My husband helped me during the childbirth,” said Swarna who was later transferred to the Chilaw Hospital.

The Puttalam Medical Services Director Dr. Paul Rajith said the doctor of the rural hospital had applied for leave and an acting doctor could not be sent immediately. He also said due to the absence of the doctor the other staff members had ignored their duties. He said a probe would be initiated into the incident.
