DEFENDING CHAMPS HFC KURUNEGALA FAVOURED TO RETAIN TITLE
Holy Family Convent Kurunegala the defending champions of the Milo All Island Netball Championships has put themselves in a strong position of retaining the title for a record sixth successive year as their three teams have qualified for the semi-finals in the Division ‘A’ category in all the three age groups.
It seems that they are going to make a repeat of last year when it was held in Polonnaruwa having swept the boards in all the four age groups.
In the quarter-final encounters that were played yesterday at the Piliyandala Central ground in Piliyandala, the Holy Family Convent lasses recorded wins over St. Joseph’s BV Matale, Presbyterian BV Dehiwala and Gothami BV Borella in the under 14, 16 and 18 categories.
Kalutara BV and Musaeus Colombo who ended as the second and third best teams last year were able to qualify for only one semi-final which was in the under 18 category.
The proceedings till the end of day were dominated by the outstation schools with the majority of the teams advancing to the semi-finals in all the age groups.
The curtains of the 22nd Milo Inter-Schools Netball Championships conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Netball Association and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd will come down today with the finals scheduled to be worked from 2.00 p.m. onwards.
The chief guest at the closing ceremony will be B.A. Abeyratne Director of Sports Minister of Education while Bandula Egodage Assistant Vice President Corporate Affairs Nestle Lanka Ltd will grace the occasion as the guest of honour.
