ECOLOGI ASSOCIATION MARKS ENVIRONMENT DAY WITH ROYAL COLLEGE

-

The ECOLOGI Association together with Royal College gave a message by educating Royalist, Invitees, Members of the Association on how they can help save the environment. The theme for this year's World Environment Day Celebration isThink. Eat. Save. The event was held at the Main Hall of Royal College. Environment Societies of several invitee schools also participated.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted. This food quickly turns into Methane gas and these gases are depleting the ozone layer, adding to global warming. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.

ECOLOGI Association strongly supports initiatives that are aimed towards creating "A Better Life, A Better World" and is aimed towards encouraging a sustainable development for the future generations to come.

To align with the global initiative to "Think.Eat.Save", the Ecologi Association marked its presence this World Environment Day and promoted a principle that will demonstrate the importance of conserving food and contributing to the needy through a renowned Lecturer, Dr Ajana Perera - a doctorate in environmental sciences from the Munich University in German, and is popular with the students for her unconventional approach to waste problems delivered the key note address on the necessity of this year's important theme.

Another Lecture on the same theme was given by Ms Ajantha Weerakoon, The President of the Eco Friendly Volunteer (ECO-V). She is extremely passionate about the environment, especially birds and works towards creating a cleaner environment. One of the highlights of the event was the drama staged by school children. The drama and an Interactive video presentation conveyed a very simple message.

Inspire children and schools to reduce, reuse and recycle. Make connections between resources, waste and the environment and Focus on everyday action you can take, at home and at school. The Royal College Islamic Society, and students who participated in the stage drama, deserve special commendation.

The proceedings concluded well, and it was hoped that those who were present would carry this all-important message to their families and friends, and thus raise – among all Sri Lankans - the level of consciousness of preserving our environment.
