Govt. trying to suppress student agitations: FLSP

- BY JAYASHIKA PADMASIRI

A social dialogue is being created in the country regarding the present educational crisis as a result of the protests made by university lectures and students

The Front Line Socialist Party (FLSP) yesterday reacted to the accusations made by Minister of Higher Education who said that the FLSP was behind the recent attack against the Kelaniya University students. They said their agitation was against the privatisation of state universities. FLSP Politburo member Duminda Nagamuwa in a press statement yesterday said that the government is trying to suppress the student struggles taking place in the society.

“The student membership of 11 students from the Jayawardanapura University has been suspended and 23 students of the Medical faculty have been barred from attending lectures while another 23 students of the Peradeniya University have also been suspended from their student memberships. So in every university either student memberships are cancelled or students are barred from attending lectures. The government is trying to suppress the student protest,” Nagamuwa said. Speaking about the attack on the Kelaniya university students, Nagamuwa added that the government is not conducting any investigations on this attack because they want to protect the goons involved in the attack. “A social dialogue is being created in the country regarding the present educational crisis as a result of the protests made by university lectures and students. The government wants to distract the attention of the people from this dialog, that is why they are placing the responsibility of the attack on various political parties,” Nagamuwa said.
