FAMILIANS K’GALA EMERGE NETBALL QUEENS FOR SIXTH SUCCESSIVEYEAR
Holy Family Convent Kurunegala were adjudged the Milo netball queens for the sixth successive year when they emerged overall champions at the 22nd Milo All Island Schools Netball Championship concluded at the Piliyandala Central Ground in Piliyandala yesterday.
The Familians were first crowned net ball queens in the year 2008 when it was held in their hometown Kurunegala and then retained it by winning in 2009 (Anuradhapura), 2010 (Matale), 2011 (Matara) and then at Polonnaruwa last year.
The Kurunegala lasses had the honour of qualifying to the semi finals in all the three age groups (under 14, 16 and 18) and they went on to bag the under 14 and 16 titles and secured a third place in the under 18 category which was sufficient for them to clinch the title for the sixth successive year.Apart from emerging the overall champions the lasses from Holy Family Convent bagged the two of the three most outstanding players award with Amanda Vindya Tennekoon taking the Under 14 award and Udara Nawinna the Under 16 award while Kalutara BV’s Sachini Rodrigo took the Under 18 award.The players to win the most outstanding players award in the Division ‘B’ category were P.A. Ashani Sewwandi of Sri Sangaraja MV Keragala (Under 14), M.D. Dinithi Sandaken of Mahaekeliya MV Kurunegala (Under 16) and R.G. Malsha Ratnayake of Ketapathwehera MV Kurunegala (Under 18).
Meanwhile in the Division ‘B’ category Sri Sangaraja MV Kergala emerged the Under 14 champion while Mahakeliya MV Kurunegala the Under 16 champion and Ketapathwehera MV Kurunegala the Under 18 champion.
