NDB helps to elevate national education standards

-

As a responsible corporate citizen, NDB has dedicated itself towards making meaningful contributions to the society through its Strategic Corporate Responsibility initiatives that uplift and empower the future generations of Sri Lanka.

In an effort to mobilize this strategic view on sustainability, NDB joined hands with the British Council of Colombo on a special project to enhance the teaching skills of Secondary English Language Teachers of Government Schools; thereby increasing t he standard of English teaching in Sri Lanka.

This project was commenced in 2012 and initially a batch of 120 secondary English language teachers in the North Western Province successfully completed this programme. With the success of the project and the posi- tive impact it had on the teachers, it was decided to extend this initiative island wide. Thus a 2nd batch of 200 state school English teachers will follow this programme conducted by British Council this year. These training programmes are currently being held in several parts of the island.

The British Council in Sri Lanka is the UK’s international organisation for educational and cultural relations and helps people around the world develop English language skills. The teachers have been selected from the Government’s 1000 Schools Programme covering a majority of the Provinces.

Commenting on the initiative Chief Operating Officer of NDB Indrajit Wickramasinghe said, “English is the international language of diplomacy and busi- ness. It is one of the most widely-spoken languages and is the official language of business in many parts of the world. English language is vital for education, career advancement and international engagement. Enhancing the teaching skills of secondary English teachers results in the students being impacted positively and this sustainable foundation will be passed on to several batches of students. Thus the teachers who benefit from this initiative in turn would impact a multitude of students island- wide”.

NDB’s wider approach to sustainability is categorised under three pillars of strategic, philanthropic and operational initiatives; out of which the Strategic initiatives revolve around entrepreneurship and education. NDB continues its efforts to empower the youth of the nation through multiple projects that place emphasis on issues that are critical for sustainable economic growth and the future success of the nation as a whole.

NDB is one of the fastest growing banks in the country with NDB Group having regional operations in Maldives and Bangladesh. The Bank offers a wide range of commercial banking services through its growing island-wide branch network, catering to an increasing customer base from all walks of life.
