S. Thomas’ and St Joseph’s clash for Lady Jayatilleke Shield

-

Another eye catching match of the Under 20 inter-school rugby season is the clash between S. Thomas’ and St Joseph’s played for the Lady Jayatileke Shield which is scheduled to be kicked off at Havelock Park at 4.30 p.m. today.

The Lady Jayatilleke Shield was donated by the late Lucian Jayatilleke of St. Joseph’s College, a reputed lawyer, in memory of his mother Evelin Jayatilleke in the year 1965.

The Thomians who are playing in the Division 1B category will be looking forward to perform another giant killing performance as the one they did against top division team Trinity whom they defeated 29-15 to regain the Canon R.S. de Saram Shield.

They are at present enjoying a fruitful season having notched up eight wins against C.W.W. Kannangara MMV, Ananda, Mahanama, Prince of Wales, Thurstan, Nalanda, Lumbini MV and St Sylvester’s.

The Josephians on the other hand who are play- ing in the Division 1A category has fluctuated fortunes and has been able only chalk up two wins from the eight matches that they have played. But as the Thomians they too had the satisfaction of recording a win against fan- cied Trinity.

The Thomians led by Devin Jayasinghe seems to be the better side even though they are playing in the Division 1B and they possess a team that could regain the Lady Jayatileke Shield which they last won in 2010.

But the Josephians led by Jason Melder who are the current holders of the Lady Jayatileke Shield will be leave no stone unturned to retain the Shield when they won the encounter last year by 37 points to 26.
