SUSPECTS IN HASITHA KELUM MURDER CASE FURTHER REMANDED

Colombo Uni computer unit deployed for more clues

The laptop containing pictures of the son of ‘Singapore Sarath’ the parliament­ary affairs secretary to Minister Mervyn Silva, carrying the fire arm purported to be the weapon used in the killing of Kelaniya UPFA PS member Hasitha Kelum Madawala, had been sent to the Colombo University Computer research unit and a report requested from them to ascertain whether this particular laptop also contained more similar pictures of the weapon.

The CID on Thursday, while presenting the progress of their investigat­ions into this incident, made this statement to the Mahara Magistrate Ms Dharhsika Wimalasiri.

The suspects in this case are Ashoka Hemantha Kumara, who functioned as the co-ordinating secretary of Minister Mervyn Silva, Rangana Kumar Perera, W Ashok Chathurang­a

and Don Imesh Ishan Edirisingh­e.

The CID informed courts that the investigat­ion report submitted to the AG and his directive had not been received yet, and requested a further date for submission of the reports and pleaded that the suspects be further remanded.

Attorney Deshal Paul representi­ng the complainan­ts said this murder had been committed due to a sudden provocatio­n among a group of family members, and a planned mass killing by the suspects had ended with this brutal murder. Submission­s were also made by Attorneys Ranjith Senanayake and Upul Gunasekara, representi­ng the suspects.

The magistrate having heard the submission­s of both parties ordered the suspects to be further remanded until 25th July, and directed the suspect who was reported to be sick to be attended by the prison authoritie­s.
