EPC RULING PARTY ACRIMONY ENDS AFTER PRESIDENT’S MEDIATION

The dispute among the Eastern Province Chief Minister Abdul Majeed Mohamed Najeeb, Governor Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickra­ma and the ruling party members has come to an end after President Mahinda Rajapaksa had advised them to cooperate with one another.

President Rajapaksa had advised Chief Minis- ter Najeeb and Governor Wijewickra­ma to cooperate with the members of the provincial council while he had given the same advice to the ruling party members. He had advised the ruling party members to work closely with the duo and to carry out developmen­t work in the two provinces to- At one time, this dispute had turned so serious that it was speculated the Council would be dissolved, and put under the Governor gether.

President Rajapaksa had given this advice when he met Mr. Abdul Majeed and Rear Admiral Wijewickra­ma together with the ruling party members at Temple Trees on Saturday evening.

A ruling party member who did not wish to be named told Daily Mirror that they have, therefore, decided to cooperate with the Chief Minister and the Governor.

“We have decided to call off the boycott of sessions we engaged in earlier,” he said.

All ruling party members had boycotted two sessions protesting against the chief minister and the governor.

The members earlier called for the removal of the Chief Minister and the Governor. However they have now agreed to go on without a change.

At one time, this dispute had turned so serious that it was speculated the Council would be dissolved, and put under the Governor.
