Supplementary estimates presented to House

The government had decided to go ahead with a census on damaged property and human life due to the civil war that was fought in the North as recommended by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and had accordingly sought Parliament’s approval for spending Rs 150,000 for it.
A supplementary estimate to this effect was presented to the House last week. Therefore Rs 150,000 was sought to meet the expenses to initiate the activities of this census.
Through this estimate the government also sought the approval for spending Rs 200 million for the construction of an airfield and for spending Rs 400 million as outstanding payments for upgrading the Colombo-Matara Railway project.
In addition approval of the House was sought for spending Rs 146 million to purchase vehicles for 11 ministries.
They included the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Civil Aviation,

Ministry of Mass Media and Information, Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prisons Reform, Ministry of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise development, Ministry of Defense and Urban Development. Ministry of Livestock Development, Ministry of Indigenous Medicine. Approval was also sought to purchase vehicles for the Senior Ministerial Secretariat and the Presidential Secretariat.
Approval had also been sought to obtain Rs 500 million to pay allowances to the newly recruited graduate trainees for Kegalle, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Killinochchi and Hambantota District Secretariats.
