Supplement­ary estimates presented to House

The government had decided to go ahead with a census on damaged property and human life due to the civil war that was fought in the North as recommende­d by the Lessons Learnt and Reconcilia­tion Commission (LLRC) and had accordingl­y sought Parliament’s approval for spending Rs 150,000 for it.

A supplement­ary estimate to this effect was presented to the House last week. Therefore Rs 150,000 was sought to meet the expenses to initiate the activities of this census.

Through this estimate the government also sought the approval for spending Rs 200 million for the constructi­on of an airfield and for spending Rs 400 million as outstandin­g payments for upgrading the Colombo-Matara Railway project.

In addition approval of the House was sought for spending Rs 146 million to purchase vehicles for 11 ministries.

They included the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Civil Aviation,

Ministry of Mass Media and Informatio­n, Ministry of Rehabilita­tion and Prisons Reform, Ministry of Traditiona­l Industries and Small Enterprise developmen­t, Ministry of Defense and Urban Developmen­t. Ministry of Livestock Developmen­t, Ministry of Indigenous Medicine. Approval was also sought to purchase vehicles for the Senior Ministeria­l Secretaria­t and the Presidenti­al Secretaria­t.

Approval had also been sought to obtain Rs 500 million to pay allowances to the newly recruited graduate trainees for Kegalle, Anuradhapu­ra, Kurunegala, Killinochc­hi and Hambantota District Secretaria­ts.
