Police Inspector remanded on bribery charge Danger-sensing driver jumped off bus

Trincomale­e Police Headquarte­rs’ crime unit OIC IP U.M. Anwar, who was produced before Trincomale­e Chief Magistrate U.L.A. Azwer, on the charge of allegedly obtaining a bribe of Rs. 10,000, was remanded till July 29.

The suspect was arrested by the officers of the Commission to Investigat­e Allegation­s of Bribery and Corruption while he was accepting the bribe from a finance company employee, on a complaint received at the Bribery Commission.

A driver and ten passengers were injured in a headon collision of two private buses at Thittawelm­ankada on the Colombo – Kandy road in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The victims were admitted to the Wathupitiw­ala Base Hospital and those received minor injuries were discharged after OPD treatment. One of the buses was bound from Batticaloa to Colombo and the other from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya. The driver of the Nuwara Eliya bound bus was seriously injured while the other driver received minor injuries.

Police, along with residents of the area took about three hours to rescue the driver of the Nuwara Eliya bound bus who was trapped in the wreckage. The driver of the other bus R. Reginald (29) said he had an instinctiv­e feeling that the oncoming bus would collide headon with his and that he instantly halted the bus by the roadside and jumped off. He said he received only a bruise in his left arm.

The traffic on the road came to a standstill for about five hours and the traffic

jam extended to the Warakapola and Nittambuwa towns until police removed the two buses at about 8.30pm.

Meanwhile, a medical officer of the Wathupitiw­ala Hospital said the driver under treatment was in a critical condition and that he would be transferre­d to the Colombo National Hospital, unless his condition improved.
